中2国際学級でPoetry Workshopを行い、英語で俳句を創作しました

　中学2年の国際学級、3学期のLanguage Artsの授業では、「Love That Dog」を読み進めました。この作品は、主人公のJackがStretchberry先生の指導を受けながら英語の詩を学び、自らも詩作に挑戦していく様子を描いています。生徒たちはこの本を通じて、Jackの詩に対する感情の変化を読み取り、実際に英語の詩（例えば、Robert FrostやWilliam Blakeなどの詩人）に触れ、そして授業中に自らも詩を作成しました。
　3月1日（金）、Language Artsの授業のクライマックスとして、小説家・詩人であるMariko Nagai先生（テンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス教授）をお招きしてPoetry Workshopを行い、生徒たちは英語での俳句の創作に挑戦しました。この日のワークショップでは、まず日本語の俳句を英訳したものを全員で分析してから、「春」の現在の季語に関するアイディアを出し合って、グループで「春」をテーマにした俳句を創作しました。

　クラス内での投票によって最優秀作に選ばれた俳句を、以下にご紹介します。

Hey there, hay fever
Runny nose and itchy eyes
Wish you would end soon

It was my first time writing a haiku in English, so it was very interesting. I was able to share haiku made by everyone on the theme of spring and get a lot of interesting ideas. So, I wanted to make a haiku even in different seasons. (Y.T.)

Today’s class was very fun. The most surprising thing was that Japanese haiku is particular about the characters used, while English is particular about the rhythm. The way English is divided into 5,7 and 5 was unique and interesting. Class F’s individuality came out during making haiku and was a lot of fun. If you’d like, let’s come again and make an autumn haiku next time! (S.M.)

Before I took this workshop, I was thinking that “haiku” is a very old thing but after we made modern haiku I noticed that “haiku” can also be a new thing! I especially enjoyed making “modern-kigo” and creating haiku with those kigo. I want to make haiku in both Japanese and English again. (K.Y.)
