World Scholar’s Cup Tokyo Roundで上位に入賞して世界大会への出場権を獲得しました

　4月28日（日）・29日（月）、神田外語学院・ベルサール秋葉原にて開催されたThe World Scholar’s Cup 2024 Tokyo Roundにおいて、国際学級の高校1年・2年の生徒が総合17 位の成績をおさめて、世界大会の出場権を獲得しました。
　World Scholar’s Cup (略称：WSC) は、英語によって教養を競う総合競技であるとともに、世界約40の国と地域の中高生との交流を通じて、国際理解を深める貴重な機会で、日本では2012年に始まりました。国内大会で上位に入賞すると、世界大会に参加する権利が付与されます。さらに世界大会で上位に入ると、Yale大学（アメリカ合衆国）で開催されるチャンピオン大会に参加する権利が与えられます。
　今回の東京大会では、約150 団体が参加した中での総合17位と、たいへん素晴らしい成績でした。さらに個人でも、高1の生徒はライティング部門で銀メダル、高2の生徒はライティング部門・ディベイト部門・スクールトップスコラーで金メダル、個人総合で銀メダルを受賞しました。日ごろの国際学級での学びはもちろん、この大会に向けて独自に並々ならぬ努力と準備を積み重ねてきた成果が十二分に発揮されたと思います。二人の活躍を教員としてもとても誇らしく思います。
　5月15日（水）、校内で行われた講堂朝礼において、高校の全校生徒の前で表彰を行い、学校長からメダルを授与していただきました。本当におめでとうございます。世界大会でも実力を発揮して活躍することを楽しみにしています。

生徒の感想

高校1年 K.K.

I had always wanted to participate in the WSC, so I was very happy overjoyed to be able to win and be teammates with such respected and wonderful scholars this time.

The WSC presents a huge amount of topics about 2 months before the competition, and after the topics are announced, me and my team practiced debates, writing, quizzes, and more with my teammates via Zoom from home 1 to 3 times a week. We had the help of other students from other schools as judges and even opponents, and we practiced in a way that was more similar to the actual competition. Apart from that, we each had to read an unbelievable amount of English material by ourselves. Since this was a team competition, I felt responsible for the team if we lost because of me, so I prepared for the competition more carefully than I usually do in school. During practice, we called each other by our first names and discussed our good points and bad points with each other, which made the practice very fruitful.

On the day of the Tokyo tournament, we interacted with native English speakers and bilingual students from other schools. There was also a talent show, and it was a lot of fun. In the debate section of the tournament, I thought I was close to winning with two wins, all three matches, but my last opponent was very strong. However, we were able to formulate our opinions in a short time and speak well enough to win. In the writing section, I was able to realize for myself the power of expression that I still lack. I intend to build on this in the future. The two days of the tournament were all in English from morning to night, which was very tiring, but the sense of accomplishment was very pleasant. It was a great learning experience. I would like to continue my studies so that I can achieve good results at the next world competition.

高校2年 S.S.

　WSCには東京女学館から初参加ということもあり、エントリーや練習会の運営などすべてがゼロからのスタートでした。発起人である私は、練習をスムーズに行うことを心掛け、資料作成やリサーチなども念入りに行い、チームメイトが気持ち良く練習に参加できることを意識しました。
　準備として、WSCから発表されるテーマの膨大な範囲学習については各自で進めることにし、チームとしての練習は週に2〜3回程度、ZOOMを活用してのディベート、ライティングを中心に行いました。今年のテーマは “Reimagining the present: 現在を再考する” です。練習の一例ですが、Do we still have to follow tradition that no longer works as it had centuries ago? や、Should we spend more time learning about the parts of the past that affect us today? という内容でディベート、ライティングやフィードバックを行いました。
　先生方にもご協力頂き、添削を受けられたことも心強かったです。また、私達が在籍している国際学級には優秀な生徒がたくさん在籍しています。チーム以外の友人がディベートの対戦相手になってくれたことも良い刺激となりました。
　大会では、練習の成果を生かすことができ、特にディベートは初参戦ながら３回戦まで勝ち上がることが出来ました。このことは私たちの大きな自信に繋がりました。ライティングでもチーム総合6位で金メダルを獲得することができました。個人でも8位にランクインした際に、「TOKYO JOGAKKAN!」と自分の名前がコールされた時には信じられない気持ちと達成感でいっぱいになりました。
　日々の学習のフォローや添削・アドバイスなど、ご尽力くださった英語科の先生方に感謝しております。知識分野の対策やディベートなど、見えてきた課題もたくさんあります。世界大会に向けてそれらを磨き、チーム一丸となって頑張ります！
